<description>The works in the series Sehnsucht are visual translations of the emotions and memories associated with the German noun of the same name, meaning ’the inconsolable longing in the human heart for we know not what’. My relationship with sehnsucht specifically addresses a pining for a homeland—one that is both familiar and inviting as well as non-Earthly and foreign—and the incorporation of my figure with a landscape environment is an attempt to include my physical body in the search for the notion of ‘home’.

<description>The Blue Eyed is an ongoing series documenting people with the recessive gene for low concentrations of melanin in the stroma of the iris allowing for blue eyes. In 2008, new research proposed that people originally all had brown eyes and those with blue eyes descended from one common ancestor from the northwestern Black Sea region with a gene mutation. These works attempt to reveal the resemblances and variations inherent in people with blue eyes: their physical details, the genetic elements that may have been inherited from the origin of the mutation, as well as the individual deviation from those genes.

		<description>Labor in Vain
Proust wrote that remembering was a labor in vain, for memories are flickering lights that fade and dim with each passing hour. Memories change each time we access them, mutating into surreal, dreamlike likenesses to life. I intended to make images about memory the way it is remembered—in fragments, thoughts, and moments. The work is a narrative without plot, characters, or climax, simply the labor in vain of remembering ghosts of truth or fiction.

Traces
The images from my ongoing project, Traces, address my desire to reevaluate my place in physical and metaphorical spaces after having lived abroad for four months. The work seeks to interpret the poetry of trace memories within spaces from “before” as well as energy in newly discovered spaces.

<description>It is a belief by many that the photograph “steals” the soul—whether through the gaze of man into the machine or the capture of man’s physical image on film or in pixels. Simultaneously it is difficult to capture the soul in photography for a photographic portrait is one of someone who knows they are being photographed: you cannot gaze into the lens of a camera as you gaze into the eyes of another human being. Capturing someone’s psychological states off guard is equally difficult; it is voyeuristic and surreal and somehow the gaze is lost. The gaze of man into camera, the photograph as a one way mirror into another person’s soul. The one-way mirror that gives us license to stare without consequence, without looking away.

The Abyss is a series of photographs of Jeremiah Ray about psychological states and control of the gaze: photos where I, as the photographer, am in control and ones where the control is lost.

		<description>Descent
The artist weaves a red string into a web encasing her body while whispers of the Sumerian myth of Inanna’s Descent into the Netherworld echo. The web binds but also tells the tale, enables and disables the movement of the body.
Live performance of Descent at Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery, Chicago, November 30, 2012.

Ascent
I decided to climb a section of mountainside in Ireland’s Burren region without protective clothing or shoes to illustrate the awkwardness of being a human trying to live as an animal in the world. Human beings were once a part of nature, yet we have become soft, hairless creatures who spend most of our time in front of televisions and computer monitors. We might have once been animals that lived off the land, in the land, a part of the world, but we have lost the qualities that would allow us to sustain ourselves without manmade protection. Our limbs are long and ungainly—our arms shorter than our legs so climbing and crawling are difficult. Our skin is easy to penetrate and wound, as can be seen in the scratches I attained in my journey.

These photos document this ascent up the mountain, but the documentation of this journey is more easily read on my skin.

<description>Liminality comes from a Latin word meaning “threshold”. It is the space between—a psychological, neurological, or metaphysical subjective state, whether conscious or unconscious. These are photographs of the human body painted or in the process of being painted, utilizing paint as a vehicle for transformation and expression. The figures are exposed to the natural landscape in this transformed state, in the liminal space or threshold between their familiar appearance and that of a being previously unfamiliar.

<description>These images were created in collaboration with Jeremiah Ray. They first document his performance of the theme of “man vs self”, the struggle which comes after the acknowledgement of one's duality. My photography centralizing on the painted body in nature follow after the performance stills.

These are photographs of the human body painted or in the process of being painted, utilizing paint as a vehicle for transformation and expression. The figure is exposed to the natural landscape in this transformed state, interacting with the environment as a being previously unfamiliar.
