In 2008, new research proposed that people originally all had brown eyes and those with blue eyes descended from one common ancestor from the northwestern Black Sea region with a gene mutation. Simultaneously it is difficult to capture the soul in photography for a photographic portrait is one of someone who knows they are being photographed: you cannot gaze into the lens of a camera as you gaze into the eyes of another human being. Capturing someone’s psychological states off guard is equally difficult; it is voyeuristic and surreal and somehow the gaze is lost. The gaze of man into camera, the photograph as a one way mirror into another person’s soul. The one-way mirror that gives us license to stare without consequence, without looking away. Ascent I decided to climb a section of mountainside in Ireland’s Burren region without protective clothing or shoes to illustrate the awkwardness of being a human trying to live as an animal in the world. Human beings were once a part of nature, yet we have become soft, hairless creatures who spend most of our time in front of televisions and computer monitors. We might have once been animals that lived off the land, in the land, a part of the world, but we have lost the qualities that would allow us to sustain ourselves without manmade protection. Our limbs are long and ungainly—our arms shorter than our legs so climbing and crawling are difficult. Our skin is easy to penetrate and wound, as can be seen in the scratches I attained in my journey. These photos document this ascent up the mountain, but the documentation of this journey is more easily read on my skin.
